Fariba Vafi, one of the most significant figures on the contemporary Iranian literary scene, was born in Tabriz in 1962. After gaining her diploma and spending a short period in a factory, she attended the Islamic Female Police training school in Teheran. On returning to Tabriz she worked as a prison guard but left after only three months. She had nurtured the dream of writing since childhood and, after her wedding, managed to gain the attention of critics and readers, despite living far from the literary circles of the capital. Her first short story collection titled Dar Omg-e-sahneh (In Depth of the Stage) was published in 1986. The second work was a short story collection named Hatta Vaqti Mikhandidim (Even When We Were Laughing) in 1999. The novel of Parande-ye-man (My Bird) was awarded the Iranian Yalda Literary Prize along with the Qolshiri Prize in 2002. After these, she published Tarlan and Rowyay-e-Tabbat (Dream of Tibet), Razi dar Kucheha (A Mystery at Alleys).
