Gish JenGish Jen è nata nel 1955 a Scarsdale, New York. Figlia di genitori cinesi, ha studiato a Harvard ed è un'affermata scrittrice di racconti, pubblicati in The New Yorker e in altre riviste e importanti antologie, oltre che nella raccolta tradotta in italiano col titolo Non capisco gli irlandesi (Neri Pozza, 2005) vivace affresco, in parte autobiografico, della società multietnica americana e del precario equilibrio su cui si fonda. Nei suoi tre romanzi Typical American, Mona in the Promised Land, and The Love Wife (trad. it. Sposa per amore, Neri Pozza, 2008), affronta i temi dell'identità americana attraverso la prospettiva dei suoi protagonisti di origine asiatica. Gish Jen è stata definita una scrittrice post-etnica per il suo tentativo di spezzare il dualismo tipico di una lettura rigida e della nozione di "asiatico-americano", come se l'identità dipendesse da una giustapposizione delle due parti anziché dalla fusione di identità complesse e plurali. Così Jen rivisita in modo originale il mito del sogno americano, cercando in esso miti, illusioni e speranze degli incroci fra civiltà. Gish Jen was born in Scarsdale, New York in 1955. Of Chinese parents, she studied at Harvard and is a well-respected short-story writer published in the New Yorker, in other magazines and well-read anthologies as well as in the collection Who's Irish?: Stories (2000), a lively fresco, in part autobiographical, of multiethnic American society and the delicate balance on which it is founded. In her three novels Typical American, Mona in the Promised Land, and The Love Wife, she tackles the themes of American identity through the perspective of her protagonists of Asiatic origin. Gish Jen has been defined as a post-ethnic writer through her efforts to break that dualism typical of inflexible reading and of the "Asian-American" concept, as if identity depended upon a juxtaposition of the two parts rather than a melding of complex, plural identities. In this original way Jen re-visits the myth of the American dream, searching for the myths, illusions and hopes of the crossroads of civilizations.
